Please describe the project specifications

We were asked to design six 10.8m x 6.3m 9-sided custom Tipis to be in keeping with a traditional Nordic Tipi from Norway.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

We developed two initial Tipis for the clients wedding reception. Four more have been produced to form the basis of a high-end wedding & function business in the Auckland region.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The customer approached us with the basic geometry (height and base dimensions) and a photo of a Tipi they liked. They wanted an NZ made product who could give them advice on whether timber poles where the best product to form the main structural elements of the tipi. The challenge was working from a photo and recreating a product. There was intricate detailing on the Tipi to give it the complete ‘boho’ look. The main fabric was sourced from Europe and the border and detailing from America. The canvas ‘cap’ was designed to retract for venting purposes. All parts were developed in house and designed to fit together in a 9-sided shape. The original Tipi had timber poles that were heavy and difficult to get engineering for. We provided a frame system in alloy tube and finished in a powder coated product to mimic original timber look. These needed to be packed down into a crate for transporting without damage while protecting the coating. The Tipis were secured on base plates with our Earth Anchors. They are engineered to withstand winds up to 95kph.
