Primary Use: Main Fabric

Please describe the project specifications

Our Client wanted a multi-color, multi-piece installation to provide summer shade on the southern side of their house, but with a very minimal frame structure. The piece had to work around the existing layout including fitting around the existing metal sculpture.

The primary challenge was how to do a simple structure with a minimal number of posts that could support the whole southern edge of the building and fit up tight against the eave, without touching the existing building. The other challenge was how to do a multi piece tension fabric installation with good shaping onto such a minimal frame.

The solution we came up with was to utilize a series of three frames that tucked just over and under the eave to allow the fabric to fit tight without touching the building. As we didn’t have much room to install multiple layers of fabric, we developed a new system for joining multiple pieces into interconnected panels that were able to have adequate shaping. We were able to accommodate the existing sculpture by framing it in a carefully placed opening in the fabric. The client was very pleased with the results.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This structure is clearly a one of a kind installation that we had to innovate some new approaches to implement.
