Please describe the project specifications

An 86 square metre covered space connecting to an existing cottage enclosed with Urban Track clear screens and fixed panels – but it must be up in two weeks so has to get around consent issues. The canopy was made in two 43 square metre sections butted together so it came under the 50 square metre cut off of local authorities. The fixed feature panels were made from laser cut corten steel with the Cafe logo on them. The client wanted the 13m x 6.5m canopy to have a rustic look to fit the country village environment where the main building is an old cottage and there is a playground including animals for children to pat. To blend with this look we supported the rolled canopy on chunky rough sawn timber posts and hand etched the frame in black paint. Guttering was built into the canopy.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client wanted to more than double the capacity of a small country café while keeping its rustic nature. The request was for the frame to be made from rusty steel but we pointed out that condensation would cause rusty liquid to drip onto dining tables. This would not be hygienic in a food establishment. Instead to achieve the rustic look we hand painted the frame with black etch and made up two panels from rusting corten steel with the café’s logo laser cut into it.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The extremely tight time frame of two weeks, the fact we began with a green field and even had to lay the concrete slab under the entire 86 sq m area, and all the extra detail to provide the rustic look.

What were the results of the project?

Every day customers are seen taking photos between the rustic wooden posts and corten laser cut panels, next to the clear screens which frame the view of sheep just over the fence.
